Smithsonian Folklife Festival

At the Temple

The Folklife Festival has outdone themselves with an amazing Bhutan Buddist temple in the middle of the mall. I spent a few hours on the mall and only made it through the Bhutan sections of the festival so I have NASA and Texas still to go. Yes, Bhutan, NASA and Texas is a strange combination, I have no idea how the Smithsonian comes up with these festival choices.

Edit to add:  This image is part of the Smithsonian Photography Initiative slideshow  of the “Best of the 2008 Festival”.

Sometimes it is good to walk home in the rain

You Can Not Leave Without a Panda

This is the back wall of The Panda Store at National Zoo. You have to love their truth in advertising. I did succeed in leaving without buying any stuffed pandas. However I suspect a stuffed red panda and clouded leopard will make their way to my niece and nephew this holiday season. I like those animals better than the giant pandas.

Money Has Changed Hands

I can now say I have officially sold my first photos as I have delivered said pieces to one of the buyers and received money.  Whohoo!  Three more deliveries to make.  I sold six pieces and am doing a trade with another artist for one her prints for a total of seven Artomatic framed photos that I will not have to find a home for in my apartment.

Insanity at the Farmer’s Market

How much do you love fresh asparagus? Enough to wait in this line? I do love some myself but not that much. The fruit at the same stall was also very tempting. But still, not enough to get in line. Greg had mentioned the line for asparagus last week but I thought really, how bad could it be? Silly me.

Perfect Timing

My air conditioner died last Sunday.  Yeah, less than 24 hours after I turned it on for the season.  I had the maintenance people in on Monday and they said it needed a whole new compressor which could take a week or two to come in.  This week hasn’t been bad and it isn’t like I’m home during the day.  But today and this weekend are supposed to be nasty – muggy and almost 100 degrees.  I was just going to run over to Target to get an oscillating fan before going in to work this morning when maintenance showed up.  They have the compressor and the contractors to put it in.

So I am working from home mainly to be able and start laundry as soon as they finish. That and it is contractors I don’t know rather than the building maintenance people that I do know.  The dryer vent is directly under the kitchen window so I close the window when running the dryer to keep the hot air from coming in.  These week I haven’t wanted to close that window. Remy is trying to help the contractors mainly by climbing into the tool kit and then the compressor box so she has been banished to my lap.  If that doesn’t work she will get tossed in the bedroom.  Callie is sleeping through the whole thing.

The really interesting thing is who is next.  My parent’s air conditioner died a few weeks ago during a stretch of 100 degree weather so obviously it is contagious.
