I have now seen bears in two national parks. This was taken at Mendenhall Glacier just outside of Juneau, Alaska.

There was a second bear cub behind the tree but he was being shy and climbed up the tree to avoid photos. I was standing on a wooden raised sidewalk over a stream. The bears were hanging out by the stream and totally ignoring all the tourists taking photos. No food is allowed at Mendenhall Glacier as the bears have become too used to humans and will come close to get food. They seem to particularly like mocha coffee drinks.

You Can Not Leave Without a Panda

This is the back wall of The Panda Store at National Zoo. You have to love their truth in advertising. I did succeed in leaving without buying any stuffed pandas. However I suspect a stuffed red panda and clouded leopard will make their way to my niece and nephew this holiday season. I like those animals better than the giant pandas.

Big Difference

One big difference between growing up in West Texas and growing up in Far North Queensland, Australia is snakes. Or rather the size of the snakes. Sure we have lost a lot of dogs to rattlesnakes in my extended family. But we never watched the family dog get eaten by a 110lb python that had been stalking the dog for days. But that could all change.

As climate change warms the nation, giant Burmese pythons could colonize one-third of the USA, from San Francisco across the Southwest, Texas and the South and up north along the Virginia coast, according to U.S. Geological Survey maps released Wednesday.

Just your cheery thought for the day. Who wants to help me turn this into a Sci-fi Channel Saturday night movie?

My assistants are less than helpful. But I get to do laundry while technically being at work so life is good. The freezing rain outside isn’t good but I don’t plan on going outside today.
